It’s nice to change up the classic burger recipe with ingredients that reflect a different part of the world and enjoy those authentic flavours. In this case, the burger recipe has just a few ingredients, but these scrumptious flavours include feta cheese, garlic, oregano and olive oil, then topped with homemade tzatziki makes a perfect Greek burger.

Helpful Tips:

Veal or Beef: either will offer a tasty juicy burger. I will sometimes use veal as I find the flavours of the meat is milder.

Red onion: is a milder onion that still gives an onion flavour but not so strong. Red onion is considered to be perfect for burgers.

Feta cheese: is a popular cheese staple in Greece. By adding it to the burger, it not only adds more flavour, but moisture to the burger as well.

Tzatziki: this absolutely delicious sauce is very popular in Greece, and it is often added to grilled chicken, beef and lamb meat dishes. It has lots of flavour and it is a perfect condiment for this burger.

Sprouted buns: sprouted bread is much easier for digestion and has less gluten. I have been eating sprouted bread for sometime now and I find it doesn’t bloat me like some gluten bread can.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • salt and pepper

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine veal, red onion, garlic, oregano, salt, black pepper, feta and olive oil. Mix the ingredients using your hands so the ingredients are well combined.
  • Form the patties, using the burger buns as a guide. Place on a plate or flat surface and allow them to rest. You can easily do this ahead of time, by covering them and place in the refrigerator.
  • Grill burgers over medium heat about 5-7 minutes on each side, turning to create a grill markings. Optional to cook them on an indoor grill, or a skillet or in the oven.

Tzatziki

  • Grate cucumber and place in a sieve over a bowl to allow the juice to drip through.
  • If you notice the yogurt needs draining, place in a cheesecloth and over a large sieve and allow the liquid to drain through. It all depends on too, what consistence you want, a thick texture would require draining the yogurt.
  • Whisk together yogurt, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil in a medium bowl.

Gather and prepare your ingredients and mix together in a large bowl. It’s important not to overmix ground meat, as it will become tough. Form the patties the same size as the hamburger buns, that way the it doesn’t appear you are eating more bun or burger. Grill the meat no longer then 5-7 minutes on each side. You don’t want to dry out the burger. Important to place the buns on the grill to toast them a bit to avoid the buns getting wet when adding the toppings, especially the tomatoes.

Enjoy this delicious Greek-inspired burger with your favourite toppings. Here I added spinach, the burger, then the tzatziki sauce, tomato, and red onion. As a side, a Greek salad, or fries.
