Apple crisp is such an all-time favourite fall dessert! When apple harvest season is in full swing, it is a tradition to bake an apple crisp and apple pie or two or even three. Just can’t seem to get enough of that cozy apple cinnamon aroma whirling from the kitchen and those delicious flavours!!

Often times I bake an apple crisp as a pie or in a baking dish, and this time I made this recipe using 4 1/2 inch fluted mini ceramic baking dish.  These were purchased on Amazon. It worked out perfectly for a dinner party I recently hosted! No scooping or cutting necessary.

This recipe I used golden delicious apples and since they flavour a pie or crisp with their natural sweetness, I reduced the sugar amount considerably, and the balance of sweetness was exactly what I was looking for.

Recipe ingredients:

  • golden delicious apples
  • lemon juice
  • sugar
  • all-purpose flour
  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • rolled oats
  • brown sugar
  • salt
  • unsalted butter

What apples do you use for baking?

Best baking apples are:

Granny Smith: are a good baking apple, and considered one of most popular. This apple is tart and tangy with a firm flesh. So keep in mine the will hold their shape when baked.

Golden Delicious: is a softer and sweeter apple and you can reduce the amount of sugar needed for the recipe. This variety my Mom has always said is the best for apple pie and crisp and I would happen to agree with her.

Ginger gold: has a slight tart flavour and turns brown slowly which is always beneficial.

Gala: is a sweet apple as well, and requires less sugar to enjoy the natural sweetness.

Honey Crisp: has a honey-sweet and tart flavour which makes a very good for baking and applesauce.

Suggestions:

Gluten-free option: this recipe can be made gluten-free, simply by replacing all-purpose flour to almond flour, oat flour or brown rice flour.

Using ramekins: simply add the same amounts to your ramekins

Storing leftover apple crisp: in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap for up to a week. You can warm them in the microwave or oven.
