HEALTHY DESSERT

I know, you are asking yourself, how can a dessert that looks so rich and decadent be healthy? Well, these ingredients in this dessert offers it’s own benefits.

  • There is a huge list of health benefits to eating avocado including high in omega 3’s which is essential to maintain a healthy heart, and brain, acts as an anti-inflammatory, fights autoimmune diseases, prevents cancer and the list goes on.
  • Cocoa powder as we know it comes from cocoa solids. Healthy benefits of cocoa decreases inflammation in the body, improves heart and brain health, fights diseases, similar to avocado’s, cocoa is highly beneficial to our health.
  • Believe it or not, coconut milk is also a healthy option. It is strengths our immune system, contains in antioxidants which helps to fight off diseases, and believe it or not it helps to aid in weight loss.
  • Maple syrup is a natural sweetener that we have all grown to love on our pancakes, waffles, french toast, cereal, and oatmeal along with add it to our baking. Maple syrup is high in antioxidants, Vitamin B’s, magnesium, zinc, calcium and potassium. It is also has fewer calories then honey.
  • Cinnamon is a spice that should be part of our daily diet. Why, because it supports our gut health and if we have a healthy gut, the rest of our body is healthy. It has anti-fugal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties that are known for their medicinal benefits.
  • Sea salt or Himalayan sea salt is the only salt I use. It has many health benefits that includes regulating blood pressure, reduces fluid retention, balances electrolytes, improves digestion and includes the minerals iron, potassium, and calcium.

A PERFECT DECADENT DESSERT FOR VALENTINE'S DAY

Top with whipping cream and dark chocolate shavings or chunks, then with your choice of fruit, fresh or frozen. This dessert has the richness of avocado and chocolate but the creaminess you get from the avocado, is so smooth. Enjoy!

THE INGREDIENTS

  • Avocados: when selecting avocadoes for this recipe, look for ripe avocados for a smooth, creamy texture you want for this dessert. The beauty of avocados is the creaminess it creates when whipped and will takes on the flavours that are added.
  • Cocoa powder: my choice is Fairtrade Camino Organic Cocoa Powder, it’s the best in my opinion for it’s deep rich chocolate flavour.
  • Unsweetened Coconut milk: is my preference for it’s coconut and nutty flavour. Easily can substitute with almond or oat milk.
  • Maple Syrup: my go-to sweetener is maple syrup in many of my recipes whenever I can. It’s less in calories and carbohydrates.
  • Cinnamon: adding this with  chocolate makes a wonderful pairing
  • Salt: a pinch is added to enhance the flavours.

THIS VEGAN DESSERT IS SO EASY AND QUICK TO MAKE!

HOW TO MAKE THIS RECIPE

Make sure your avocados are ripe before you start this recipe. The exterior should be brown in colour, and when you gently press them with your fingers, they should give slightly. I have to say I have used ripe avocados that felt almost too soft and when I opened them, they were perfect. There is nothing worse then trying to work with a half ripe avocado. Blend all of the ingredients into the food processor until creamy and smooth.

The texture is creamy, light and mousse like that makes this dessert oh so yummy! When making this dessert, make sure you blend the avocados and ingredients really well to get that smooth texture similar to a mousse.

GARNISH to your heart’s content, there are so many options from fruit and in this case I added frozen or fresh is optional of course, dairy or vegan whipped cream, shredded coconut, chocolate shavings or chunks.

KETO-FRIENDLY OPTION: replace maple syrup for stevia, erythritol, or xylitol as the sweetener.

FAQ

Can you taste the avocado in this dessert? This is a common question, and the answer is no. When I serve this at a dinner party, my guests will often ask, what is in this dessert, it tastes absolutely delicious!!

Can I substitute maple syrup for honey? Absolutely, the flavour will change slightly, and honey tends to be more sweeter then maple syrup, so you may want to add 2 tablespoons as appose to three.

How long can I store this dessert? Place each ramekin in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days in an air-tight container.
