Hi! I'm Rose

Easy Garlic Naan Bread

Naan bread is a traditional Indian and south Asian crispy bread and is often used as a dip or wrap. Most often enjoyed with many dips, sauces and stews.

This easy Naan bread recipe is straight forward and only takes under an hour.  When I first made Naan bread while I was teaching Hospitality. My students and I were making Butter Chicken to sell to staff and thought Naan bread would complement the Butter Chicken nicely. So we thought, why not give it try, it can’t be that hard. Well, it turned out to be a hit!

There are many versions of this recipe and I have made it with yeast as well without yeast. I have to say to make a fluffy, soft and delicious Naan bread it doesn’t require adding yeast.

Ingredients and Tips

  • Flour: you need all purpose flour
  • Baking powder: is a fast acting leavening rising agent
  • Baking soda: enhances texture
  • Salt: I like to use Himalayan salt or regular salt is good
  • Extra virgin olive oil: I recommend a good quality evoo
  • Milk or water: I like to use milk if I can for flavour and 1%-3% will work for this recipe or simply add water
  • Greek yogurt: add a lovely soft texture to the dough and it add a delicious tangy flavour
  • Butter: can use salted or I only use unsalted in my baking for brushing on the naan bread once it’s cooked
  • Garlic: one crushed clove needed
  • Parsley or Cilantro: are both great options for garnishing

Instructions

In a large bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add olive oil, milk/water and Greek yogurt. Using a wooden spoon, stir ingredients until the dough comes together. Transfer to the counter and knead for 2-3 minutes until the dough forms into a ball.

Place dough in lightly oiled bowl, cover with a plastic wrap, and set aside to rest for at least 30 to 40 minutes.

Flatten dough with your hands and cut dough into 6 equal pieces. Lightly flour a work area on countertop, roll out each dough into thin circle shape to about 1/8 inch thickness.

Lightly brush skillet or cast iron pan with butter. Place dough in skillet/pan, and cook for about 1 minute until bubbles form and bottom is golden, flip and cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Turn over and brush cooked side with garlic butter. Continue cooking the remaining dough.

In a small sauce pot, melt butter and add garlic, simmer for about 1 minute until the garlic becomes fragnant. Brush over the warm naan bread and garnish with parsley or cilantro. Serve!

Oh it’s the BEST, fresh warm Naan bread brushed with garlic butter and then scoop it up with this delicious vegan butter chicken dish! It is soooo good!!

Once Naan bread is cooled STORE at room temperature in a ziplock bag for up to 3 days. To freeze, place in a freezer safe ziplock bag or container with a lid and it will keep up to 2 months. To reheat, you can place in the oven at 350F for about 15 minutes wrapped in aluminum foil.
